The Chair: A Metaphor for Human Interaction

Having analysed some multi-generational, co-living homes in my typology review, I found many of these homes had more than just one or two shared living spaces and living together in this way enabled increased communication between the families.

I chose the chair as a metaphor for human interaction that takes place in a supported and deliberate manner.  By observing and engaging in close interaction through conversation and connection with another, I redesigned the chair by following the form of the of posture of the human body when actively engaged in conversation.  I created an angled base, a forward leaning back and a single armrest that was created using the superfluous area of the back rest.

Time is also an important aspect of interaction and connection.  Time is represented by age and generations of humans who engage in the process of communication.  There is a meaningful and lengthy interaction between different generations that is represented through the form of the chair and through the visibly worn parts of the seat and the armrest.  This communicates how relationships work, how wisdom is passed on through the generations and represents the support that exists within families.  Just like the chair, this engagement is not always comfortable but it’s components are important in developing an ongoing inter-generational process of purposeful connection.  This chair which is a metaphor for human interaction is a piece of furniture that supports and encourages it role through its function.

Finished Product!

When I look back and remember that I started with the idea of creating one bracelet, I am so proud that I have managed to create a collection of earrings, a bracelet, three necklace and a hair clip! I found so much joy in creating these little timber pieces I couldn’t stop! I will definitely be creating more in the future in my free time…

A Collection: Necklace added

Why not include a necklace!

I was so excited at what I could make I decided to create a necklace as well.

Based on the design of the Peace sign, I deconstructed it and created an abstract form from it…

NECKLACE OPTION 4

I decided on the horizontal design more than vertical as it felt more contemporary and could be worn on a short chain.

A Collection: Earrings added

Having played around with the bracelet and the possibilities of the laser cutter, I thought or creating some earrings. Earrings will be able to also carry a scent, as it is close to the nose. It reminds me to adding scent to the temples.

Including the symbol of an embrace, a simple design was able to showcase the beautiful timber and represent something abstractly.

These were then sanded down, holes were drilled at the back and AB glue was used to be sure these will hold up and last!

Timber selection at Otto’s Timber

IMG_4270

Yesterday morning I visited Otto’s Timber Joinery and Hardware in Magill, I had never been in this area. It was full of suppliers I had heard of and craft stores selling raw materials for creation.

Otto’s had a wide range of timbers for me to choose from.

I asked for the most porous wood and was told to choose the lightest timber there as it would have more air bubbles. I found the Cedar, European Maple and Poplar the best.

From these three colours of timber I designed the bracelet to suit…

This design was created on Revit, a program I am used to using in Architecture, it was very fun to use for something on such a small scale!

Once happy with the way it looked digitally, I exported the file as a DXF, put it in Illustrator and got it laser cut first in MDF to see if the dimensions were right and if it felt right as a bracelet.

This design did not work as it was too big for a wrist, I had to then make a new one back in Revit. I had ideas of either gluing them together as a whole or having an elastic running through the bracelet or even a clasp.

The second time using the three different timbers also didn’t work as the pieces were too thin, and reconstructing them together was too difficult as they were so small and relied on the smallest details.

Another design needs to have larger timber pieces and overlayed to create a thicker piece.

Foam Workshop Modelling

Spending the day looking at the design of the bracelet, how it could be formed.

The forms that were tested were hard edged forms representing the harshness of the world and its unpredictability.

Other forms were a “hand holding” motion of two interlocking pieces.

The last form represents the idea of embracing someone, a peaceful message.

Made from a porous wood such as pine or cedar (cedar being used for moth balls traditionally) in order to absorb the liquid scent.

I will go and visit “Otto’s & Co” Timber Suppliers in Stepney and “Fitch The Rubber Man” in George Street to investigate how this bracelet can put on and on. If itll need a clasp or elastic band.

Biodegradable Scented Bracelet

Further development in my design…

Working on the idea of a wearable scented, textured object, bringing you peace and reassurance.

Remembering the importance of reuse and ecological impact- using a product that is biodegradable.

Wood is a beautiful organic and comforting material, a porous and absorbing wood would be able to hold a scent and slowly release it throughout the day.

The way the wood feels and is cut and shaped is important to the message it conveys and the mood is makes one feel when wearing it and looking down at it.

Wearable Peace& the Senses

Sight, Taste, Smell, Touch & Hearing

My original idea of  someone entering a place of peace away from the modern war of work, technology, social and economical issues has been molded and developed to pursue the brief by MOD.

A small scale object such a jewelry is a way to carry discretely a piece of peace.

Its form will please sight.

Its scent will please smell.

Its material will please touch.

It could create sound when worn, pleasing hearing.

A jewelry collection.

My idea developed from one piece to a whole collection, wearing peace makers touching all the senses.

Ideas:

  • balancing earnings creating white noise in your ears blocking out external distracting sounds.
  • Listening to the sound when walking and its rhythm rather than listening to music in earphones.
  • Disconnecting from technology, reconnecting with natural forms and sounds.
