Cafe Design: Melbourne

“The Kettle Black”2015 Eat Drink Design Awards: Best Cafe Design winner

by Studio You Me

The Kettle Black consists of what is on trend right now – light and spacious, with materials of concrete, pistachio- colour seating, warm oak and brass. Its neutral colour palette allows for the food to provide the pop of colour. The space is elegant, stylish and inviting creating the perfect balance between a luxury and effortlessness allowing for both a cafe and dinning experience.

One half of The Kettle Black occupies the ground floor of a fine detailed white Victorian manor, the other half shares with a quite brutal new modern build. The clash of those extreme contexts is awe-inspiring.

The Market Lane Coffee

by Sarah Trotter from HEARTH.

Market Lane Coffee is a boutique coffee roastery and retailer, born in 2009 and based in Melbourne. Sourcing their beans seasonally from some of the best coffee growers in the world, roasting them carefully in small batches at our Prahran Market roaster.

Main joinery elements have been kept separate to the walls allowing the space to seem original and “worn”, in addition old damaged wall tiles and and original high level panelling have been retained. The use of light fittings glowing on the white painted brick wall allow for clarity and minimalism.

Hidden down Wills Street in the business grid around Flagstaff Station, this cafe/restaurant is a trendy hideout from the rest of the bustling CBD across from the gardens. Providing a delicious menu and photogenic dishes to guarantee the best #flatlay without the hefty price tag!

The rustic brick interior reflects the heritage-listed building the cafe resides in. It was the home of Melbourne’s first telephone exchange company (hence all the telephone references and puns!)

The modern furniture and lush flower arrangements set a cosy ambience in the sleek industrial setting.

Ever since I started going to University in the city, I have developed a new pass time discovering what the town has to offer.

Adelaide is full of different cafes and restaurants to choose from. These all vary and all carry certain characteristics and style setting them apart from one another. Whatever mood you’re in, there’s a cafe for you!

My  favourite spots are Please Say Please, Sad Cafe, Exchange, East End Providore, Hey Jupiter, Argo, Howling Owl, Le Carpe Diem, BTS cafe, Steven Ter Horst, Parsec, Cafe 55 and those are just to name a few, I have many more to visit!

One thing they do have in common however, is their incredible interior design, attracting the creative minds with an eye for aesthetics and taste for a perfect setting to eat and drink, study or read- and why not snap a few pics for instagram! (you know it’ll look great on your feed)

“A 2013 survey found that 54 per cent of 18-24 years olds have taken a photo of their food while eating out, while 39 per cent have gone on to post it online. 90 new photos hashtagged #foodporn are uploaded to Instagram every minute.” http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/aussies-share-the-food-love-by-posting-pictures-of-meals-on-social-media/story-fneuz8wn-1226637885462

Fact!

I really do enjoy the experience of settling in a small, but well designed and decorated cafe with great smell and atmosphere. You will find all cafe owners always welcome you photographing their store- let’s be honest, it’s free advertising! I even received a free cupcake for it once 😉

Get out there and explore this beautiful town of ours!

Beauty Beyond

Startrail Photography

Star trails are primarily used by astronomers to find the quality of a location for telescopic observations but they can also be a photographic art form.

I have titled this photograph “Beauty Beyond” because beauty is not limited to the earth.  With modern technology we are able to see into space and to admire other planets and galaxies. I am amazed at this alien beauty. The vivid and bright colours are almost overwhelming and just seeing each unique galaxy floating in black space is incredible; it is literally beauty out of this world.
